The difference between cancel culture & critiquing content is obsession & intention. A vindictive person repeatedly posts & piles-on to ruin someone. An individual who critiques is objective & doesn’t get some sick pleasure over destroying another human being. Just my 2 cents.

Basically, it’s a meaningless buzzword frequently used by right wingers to dismiss the legitimacy of the voices of the disadvantaged.

Don’t get me wrong. Pile-ons are real. Twitter can be toxic. But, please, don’t use right wing attack words designed to delegitimize marginalized voices uncritically.

Cancel culture is an interesting one because it’s so poorly defined. I have a section in my course where crisis communication and “cancel culture” are considered and discussed. A lot of students would agree with you—the term is meaningless and overused.

Have you watched
@Contrapoints 's video about cancelling? I think she does a great job at defining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjMPJVmXxV8 …https://www.reddit.com/r/ContraPoints/comments/ejkp0q/brief_writeup_summary_of_the_7_cancel_culture/ … - Show replies

This seems like a really limited definition of mob efforts to stifle free speech. This practice could play out both ways as anti-science mobs coordinate harassment against physicians or vaccine scientists. Shouting down distressing ideas is antithetical to rational engagement.
