I’ve dealt with patients who let their small tumors grow for months and even years, going from easily treatable to highly difficult to treat for cure to even metastatic. It’s depressing.https://twitter.com/UrbaneDoc4Kids/status/1274523945178411009 …

You: they don’t cure breast cancer because they’ll lose money Me: chemo is expensive and often works You: what about relapse? Me: what about cures for decades? You: whatever. I do what I want.

We had a woman with a fungating breast mass in the ED once. I’m asking the cancer guys how it got so bad. Their answer was, “She had to have let it go for months. Probably only came in because of the smell.” Kinda scary, the denial people get.

Not just months, often it’s years. These fungating masses are usually fairly indolent cancers, because the aggressive ones metastasize before they fungate.

Often they go for years without seeking treatment because they can’t afford it. Even when it’s small and “cheap” to remove. I had a dentist chastise me for not seeking treatment earlier. Due to the delay, I needed crowns & bridges. Should I feed my kids? Or get a filing?

Still others have trauma from watching relatives/friends die from cancer they thought was treatable & feeling like the system can’t help them. These folks turn to CAM. Drs should ask patients what they’ve seen & have a dialogue about it.

My aunt did this. Open wounds. No chance.

When my testicular cancer spread to lymph nodes in my back I consulted w/ 2 chem oncos who recommended chemo, 2 rad oncos who recommended radiation. Fully expected the surgeon to recommend surgery. Instead he tipped the balance to chemo and told me to come back if it didn't work

I did eventually have to go back to him, but 20+ years on I'm still cured.

So thankful my smart mom had amazing oncology team that diagnosed her Stage 1 TNBC within weeks due to screening recommendation. She follow treatment recommendations and it has been over 5 years with no recurrence due to surgery, chemo, and radiation. ❤️❤️❤️
