It’s basically a meaningless and hypocritical insult. Whenever I see it used by a writer, I’m MUCH less likely to take the argument being made seriously. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jan/20/virtue-signalling-putdown-passed-sell-by-date …

I don’t meant to be harsh, but the term has lost all meaning other than “I don’t like what you’re saying or doing that you think is virtuous.”

It's very much a right wing dog whistle now. If you show *any* kind of compassion or support for something they don't like... "Virtue signalling". It's now just code for "I'm an asshole, and don't take anything I say seriously"

That’s an excellent description of what the term now means in practice. It’s often used in concert with attacks on “SJWs,” another term that’s lost all meaning other than as a right wing dog whistle and attack.

Yup, virtue signalling and labelling anyone with a social conscience with a supposed slur of "SJW" are the two big ones. As soon as either of those are used, I pretty much disregard anything else they have to say.
