      48. Here Handley cherry picks the arguments from a few lockdown opponents without making any serious attempt to account for reduced economic activity from the fear and behavioral change associated with a pandemic not managed via lockdowns.

      49. I don't really know how to classify Handley's final fact, fact 16, because it's a prediction, not a fact. The first part is simply untrue unless you consider (as Handley perhaps does) that epidemiological modeling is not science.pic.twitter.com/sp6LVyIAGp

      50. The second part remains to be seen, I suppose, but seems to be more about Handley setting the stage so that he can respond "I knew you'd claim that" to any successes we experience, and continue to...well, yes, declare analysis a success no matter what happens.

      51. I'll conclude by recalling three very basic questions we teach our students to ask when analyzing claims that they come across on the internet or elsewhere. Who is telling me this? How do they know it? What are they trying to sell me?

      52. I've already answered the first question. J. B. Handley is the co-founder of a vaccine-skeptical organization who continues to promote debunked ideas about a vaccine-autism connection.

      53. I am dreadfully sorry for the challenges he has faced as a parent of an autistic child and understand his search for an explanation, but I disagree vehemently with him on the science.

      54. How does know what he is telling us? His background is in business, not biomedical research or epidemiology as best as I can tell. The work he presents here appears largely cherry-picked from the COVID literature, comprising mostly popular articles from lockdown-skeptics.

      55. What is he trying to sell us? I don't have an answer to this question. I do worry, however, that as we try to put COVID in the rear view mirror with the help of a vaccine, we are going to face challenges from vaccine skeptics.

      56. One thing that vaccine skeptics can do to minimize vaccine uptake is to attempt to downplay the severity of COVID itself. Whether or not this is among Mr. Handley's motives, we need to be vigilant against such efforts.

It’s worth pointing out that Handley is well established as an anti-vaccine activist, not a vaccine skeptic. Language distinction here is crucial: anti-vaccine advocates, vaccine refusers, vaccine-hesitant ppl, vaccine skeptics as related only to COVID—these are all different.

Yes! NEVER let antivaxxers claim the word “skeptic.” NEVER! They are NOT skeptics.

I do think the term “COVID vaccine skeptic” might have a valid place in discourse in certain limited contexts as we’re developing the vaccine, but yes, it shouldn’t be used wrt anti-vax advocates, vax refusers or vaccine hesitant ppl.
