Nobody here is arguing that US laws protecting trans people aren’t close to nonexistent or that the current administration isn’t unrelentingly hostile to trans people and their rights, hence my retorting, “Whataboutism.”

Nothing whataboutery here. A response to the usual hyperbole that somehow the UK is a hellhole for trans people. What we have in the UK is actually a muddle but a compromise that has some balance between rights. Activists are not happy with any compromise of rights.

Just look at the spittle and froth coming out of (mostly) men’s mouths because and intelligent and articulate women writes about her (awful) experiences as a woman and the need to recognise women as a sex class deserving their own protections.
