This was never a bizarre conspiracy theory. Doctors suspected for decades that smoking was unhealthy before the link to lung cancer was finally demonstrated in the early 1950s. (Fun face: Nazi doctors showed the link first during WWII.)https://twitter.com/icecreamconean/status/1270390921247547394 …

It was once a bizarre conspiracy theory that smoking kills people. The leading doctors and health associations in the world said it was fine. If telecommunications companies were causing harm (feasible in theory) they’d not only hide it but pay scientists to claim it’s unfounded.

The myth that doctors thought cigarette smoking was “fine” came from tobacco company commercials that used doctors or actors portraying doctors to endorse their cigarettes as healthy (or at least as not unhealthy).

They even did “studies” that they then had bought off doctors doctors trumpet trumpet in ads to demonstrate that their cigarettes were safe, caused less throat irritation, etc.

My Grandfather stopped smoking 60 a day 50 years ago because the evidence that it is unhealthy was already strong enough to scare him.
