I got it wrong about something. It turns out that @TheLancet #hydroxychloroquine/#COVID19 study was likely fraudulent, thanks to a small, very dodgy company called Surgisphere. Here, I admit my error and try to set things right.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2020/06/05/surgisphere-debacle/ …

Oh, and one more thing: Those claiming I was trying to avoid the issue were full of 💩. It takes even me a few hours to write one of my 4,000 word posts. While you thought you were taunting me, I was writing, and smiling.😉

Finally, unlike some people who are wrong about something—cough, cough, Very Eminent Rising Star in Oncology—I'm not going to go back and delete my Tweets about this study, even though they now embarrass me. I understand the temptation, but I won't do it.

One more thing. There are still plenty of observational studies that strongly suggest that #Hydroxychloroquine probably doesn't work against #COVID19. Even with the Surgisphere/Lancet study gone, that doesn't change. Wait for the RCTs, and don't use the drug outside of an RCT.

Also, I will block trolls and bots posting after this Twitter thread. I'll take my lumps for my previous error, but that doesn't mean I have to tolerate trolls and bots.

And again late treatment on almost dying patient. I read high mortality rate about this one. Do we expect a drug to do miracles on very severe patients? At this stage the virus is long gone how could it be significantly efficient? I don't understand the point of these studies.

This retraction changes little to nothing in the big picture. Thanks for addressing it so quickly cause I love citing your posts. The deniers, however, will always find something to cling to no matter what.

That is correct. As I said in my post, before the Surgisphere study, there were already a number of observational studies that failed to find even a hint of a signal of benefit from #Hydroxychloroquine in #COVID19 patients. Retraction of this study doesn't change that.

As every decent doctor knows... 1. No one knows everything, especially when there is a new disease 2. Being open about mistakes is part of the job Do any of these people quote Wakefield still?

Columbia-NEJM study: mysterious missing data computations and much worse hypoxia in treatment group even after propensity matching. U Minn- NEJM study has all types of data measurement and bias possibilities- even the outcome is not measured. So many studies are giving hcq late

I like to think this particular incident wouldn't have gotten so far if other people hadn't pushed in the opposite direction for their own selfish reasons. I hope people will learn from this that if you try to force the results you wish for, you end up with bad science.

You still went after a colleague and said he was full of shit on Twitter. As a fellow doctor/researcher, that sort of behaviour is unacceptable. Sorry.
