Are these HIPAA violations? I argue yes because someone who knows the patients could potentially identify them. At the very least, it is HIGHLY unethical to post photos of patients in such extremis to social media when they are unable to give consent. https://twitter.com/labecs/status/1264683361701789696 …

OK I’m told these photos are from Italy. Even if HIPAA doesn’t apply, they are ethically problematic.

How do you balance the moral imperative to protect the identity of the patient with the moral imperative to protect the health of the population through education?

Is there no other way you can demonstrate to the public other than taking photos of patients without their consent? Seems more like the ends justify the means.

Yes I have the same question , like @gdbassett, how do we educate the non-believers here? Tbh, people who haven’t seen a person in their circle sick or didn’t get a chance to go to Hospital are totally in the dark about the havoc that this virus plays with the human body.

You could ask for consent. You could film an actor a demonstrator. You could have someone explain their circumstances if they survived. Is their no other way to get your point across?

Similar rules do apply there. Also the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Besides, as you say, it is highly unethical

I'm reporting these photos to Twitter - not sure if it will do any good, but this should be taken down.

Yes, these are patients in Italy. I saw these same patients in a FB post. Still a big no no.
