Per usual, my late night threads usually abruptly stop and continue the following day. I’m tired, but I want to get this started because I’ll forget by morning.

Each social media platform has its own rules around unfollows. For example, on Instagram it’s super common to participate in the follow/unfollow method to boost one’s audience size. Clout chasers - we all see you. It’s annoying. Stop that.

On Twitter, it’s all about that ratio of followers to following. You’ll see the most dramatic examples with politicians and celebs. They follow few accounts while they maintain a large audience.

Yes, you will get people on Twitter in STEM & medicine who are focused on that ratio of followed accounts to following. That ratio is status. It indicates influence and perceived authority more so than that blue checkmark. (Cue the people coming to say “iT’s a wHiTe ChecKmArK”)

So you’re saying I should unfollow at least several hundred people?
