Anti-vaccine sentiment is strongly associated with conspiracy thinking and protection of individual freedoms, traits that are finding a home among far-right groups. @crackedscience looks at the #antivaccine movement in 2020 @gorskon @DrPaulOffit @ryarmsthttp://mcgill.ca/x/4iL

Good article but I don’t think it’s just finding a home among the far right. There have been conspiracies about chipped vaccines for many years that tie back to far right/religious fundamentalist thinking. It’s the alleged “mark of the beast” to many. Concerns & hysteria about >>

Indeed. There’s a myth that antivaccine sentiment was, until recently, primarily a phenomenon among hippy-dippy granola crunching lefties. That’s wrong. Antivax views have long been prevalent on the far right going back to the antifluoridation movement in the 1960s.

Yep. Attended a CDC meeting in my town on H1N1, 2009. First guy outside was a "right wing nut job" by his own admission. The problem with the anti-vax left is their hypocrisy--clinging to science on some topics like climate, abandoning it on vax.https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2009/8/29/774141/- …

Thread: https://youtu.be/Al9CzVQVhLo  The hypocrisy is a large problem. As is fervent religious beliefs + unhinged post modernism on the left. This is how we ended up with so many second wave radical feminists, oddly enough several lesbian separatist radical feminists, promoting >>>

100% There has been a segment of the right & left that has always held anti vaccination sentiment.

Though I’m always happy to meet someone on the L that is aware of the fact that segments of the L promote conspiracies. Delusions about conspiracy theorists only being on the R have allowed major dysfunction to go unchecked on the L for decades. It drives me up the wall.

Actually long before the antiflouridation movement in the1960s. Shortly after Edward Jenner (1760s?) demonstrated how to use cowpox to vaccinate people against smallpox there were people opposed to it in God's name.

Back when I fell into the vaccine hesitant/ AV crowd 12 years ago, it was more hippy dippy. But at least on the surface there was a plausible mechanism to some theories. The right wing AV woke me up. They believe some stupid crazy stuff. My kids are vaccinated now.

And when it was right wing, they were religious and didnt do it for religious reasons, but they didnt push the pseudoscience. They were quiet about their choice. Recently they have gotten very loud and aggressive. Its definitely different today. But yes AV is on R and L.
