The opening credits sequence and first scene after of “Once Upon a Time in the West” are a master class in a slow build of tension. It’s the sort of moviemaking that would be impossible today. Audiences no longer have the patience for such a slow build.

I remember seeing this classic for the first time in a large auditorium of the Gymnasium Erasmianum here in Rotterdam in my first year of secondary education. Made quite an impression, couldn't believe Henry Fonda actually killing the kid, hated 'him' for a long time after that.
