I want to share some thoughts on a difficult topic that’s come up today. It took over MedTwitter for a solid 12 hours. TW: sexual harassment I’m addressing it because it took place on social media and I have a similar case study on this topic.

The case study involves this incident. I discuss the non-apology that followed and the minimization/trivialization of harm caused by the comments. https://twitter.com/connie_stlouis/status/607813783075954688?s=21 …https://twitter.com/connie_stlouis/status/607813783075954688 …

There are some key differences between what happened with Hunt and the issues that came up today; however, in both cases the lack of understanding of the impact and harm is very similar. I also noted a non-apology today.

Here’s the thing about today... So many people on
#MedTwitter attempted to engage this person. Many were incredibly professional in how they publicly commented. I’m amazed by this community’s response. It was tough to watch because their professionalism was met w/ hostility.2 replies 0 retweets 17 likesShow this thread -
Ok, a few things I noticed. 1. The person repeatedly shared private SoMs exchanges. A client’s private Snapchat video was shared to a larger audience & tweets were taken out of context to use as endorsements for services. Private DMs were also referenced.

There are very few cases where this behavior is appropriate. As a general rule of thumb, please do not publicly share private conversations. If you are running a business or service, this activity is never appropriate. Client or potential client, approval is always required.

2. No amount of explanation or clarification can take away harm. When multiple medical professionals joined the conversation to indicate the issues, that should have been reason to pause. Yet, the conversation continued for almost 12 hours.

3. Defensiveness and arrogance will never persuade people to defend or agree with a position. It alienates an audience.

4. The veil of anonymity is thin. I doubt the person would have been as bold if his pic & name were clearly associated with his words. (Some people are anon for safety reasons. Many engage professionally or at least they interact in a way that doesn’t bully or harass others.)

Name and shame. Whenever anyone behaves badly, I’m favor of naming and shaming.

Ah. I’d blocked them so this was very perplexing to me. Thanks for clarifying.
