This is why sticking your head in a plastic bag is dangerous. CO2 can’t escape, and as you exhale the concentration goes up continuously and you become hypercapnic. You can also become hypoxic (low oxygen) because fresh air outside the plastic bag can’t get in. 17/

THIS IS NOT HOW SURGICAL MASKS WORK. Inside a mask, air moves with each breath, as it’s designed to. Otherwise people would pass out quickly, and as I’ve already said, health workers routinely wear surgical masks for hrs on end - and nobody complains to the hospital employer. 18/pic.twitter.com/0b6dteUKiH

I admit, masks don’t feel good. They essentially need to be uncomfortable and mildly restrictive to work properly (ie, to keep out droplets). But the discomfort of your breath not moving with absolute freedom and your face getting sweaty under the mask is NOT HYPERCAPNIA. 19/

Can a mask be harmful for someone with a breathing disorder? Possibly yes, but this is not what the hypercapnia claim is. It’s a highly misinformed and misleading idea not based in science that wearing a mask can cause a healthy person to get sick from high CO2. 20/pic.twitter.com/19aS4040Xj

This claim is harmful because PPE like masks are crucial for slowing the spread of
#COVID19. Masks have been attacked from various angles designed to provoke strong emotions. Fear that masks themselves cause respiratory harm may end up being the most damaging dysinfo of all. FIN17 replies 27 retweets 218 likesShow this thread -

You spent a LOT of time writing a lot of really good info debunking a very stupid disinformation campaign that literally not a single person who doesn’t already know it’s disinformation will ever read, much less accept. I’m sure you also know this.

Do you know anyone who was initially pro-vaccine who then converted to antivax after hearing antivax propaganda? Ever known anyone who’s ever known anyone like this? I’m going to guess no. Again, just a hunch. People who believe this sh*t are committed to believing sh*t

Know personally? No. Know of? Yes. As for the other direction, our goal is not to "convert" hard core antivaxxers. Our goal is to inoculate those who might be susceptible to antivaccine propaganda against the misinformation behind the propaganda, to make them less susceptible.

I personally know highly educated, otherwise very good people, who converted to antivaxx based off of online disinfo. It wasn’t like a switch flipped one day, but they’ve slipped into all the conspiracies now and years later I don’t even recognize who they were anymore.

It's a slow drip drip drip of pseudoscience, and like water shaping rock over time, it can have a massive impact.
