See the Spaniards out running - Most people do not live in @NYGovCuomo NY or CA bubble. The Swedes never shut down ( and today report 5 fatalities ) - people will take responsible protective measures. From the start of this pandemic, Australia has recorded 97 deaths. Each life is precious. But as a doctor, I’m embarrassed when people call us heroes. There are currently 17 COVID ICU patients in the whole of Australia. Public health intervention & contact tracing worked. 1/

But we aren’t going to get there. Our government failed too badly. I think Prof. @ProfLWiley is right that we are now looking, at best, at mitigation, not containment, of #covid19 - though of course, we should still try for the best outcome. https://twitter.com/proflwiley/status/1258849939293122561?s=21 …https://twitter.com/ProfLWiley/status/1258849939293122561 …

Imagine two scenarios. In Scenario A, back in March, US decided to impose extreme #SocialDistancing short-term while immediately investing in massive roll-out of infrastructure to #TestTraceIsolate, i.e, what every pre-pandemic plan envisioned & several countries achieved. THREAD

You are likely correct. The good news is that states like Georgia and Florida have fared far better ( albeit to date ) than the models and experts have projected. Stringent protective measures, like protecting nursing homes, while allowing people to live & work seem right

I don’t think Georgia and Florida are good models. We won’t see the cost of recent decisions for several weeks, but they’ve both had problems even before Georgia went to unlimited opening.

Do you have any basis to think unlimited reopening will make things better? I think we can all wish that our government has gone for short term stay at home followed by robust trsting, tracing and tracking and building capacity that would have helped contain. But it didn’t.

I would suggest that poor governance and the horrific outcomes suffered in America rest on the doorstep of the Governor’s office in NY - where 1/2 of America’s fatalities reside - and within the nursing homes where it was “mandated” COVID+ patients be held
