Is it common/appropriate for people with an MBBS to instead use MD after their name? This topic has come up a few times recently. There’s been no consensus. DMs are open if your prefer to discuss privately.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it but I would say it's inappropriate in that they don't actually have an MD degree. That said I can understand why they would do it and it's not like they're intentionally trying to deceive people.

MD -> Physician MBBS -> Physician Therefore MD = MBBS. Math checks out.

There's a wrinkle I frequently run into discussing DO degrees with colleagues from Europe and Australia. In the US, the DO is pretty much equivalent to an MD and function pretty much the same.

I discovered this years ago, when I encountered UK skeptics/docs harshly criticizing DOs. I was puzzled. It took the UK folks explaining to me that, there, DOs are much more like chiropractors than MDs.

I also point out that some of the finest docs I've known have been DOs. For example, the best surgical critical care doc I ever knew was an anesthesiologist who happened to be a DO who helped train me during my residency.
