Is it common/appropriate for people with an MBBS to instead use MD after their name? This topic has come up a few times recently. There’s been no consensus. DMs are open if your prefer to discuss privately.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it but I would say it's inappropriate in that they don't actually have an MD degree. That said I can understand why they would do it and it's not like they're intentionally trying to deceive people.

MD -> Physician MBBS -> Physician Therefore MD = MBBS. Math checks out.

There's a wrinkle I frequently run into discussing DO degrees with colleagues from Europe and Australia. In the US, the DO is pretty much equivalent to an MD and function pretty much the same.

Most DOs don't do osteopathy after they graduate, because they enter much the same residencies as MDs. Indeed, recently DO and MD residencies have come under the same supervisory body. By the time DOs and MDs finish residency, they are basically the same.

In Europe, Australia, etc., DOs are more akin to chiropractors than MDs. That's where misunderstandings come in. US docs don't understand the disdain in the UK and Europe towards DOs, and UK and European skeptics don't understand DOs are equivalent in the US and are colleagues.
