As I’ve been saying for a while now, these “only the old die of #COVID19” hot takes are one step away from just coming right out and referring to the elderly and chronically ill as “useless eaters.”https://twitter.com/JasonSCampbell/status/1255573596933685250 …

Ben Shapiro: "If somebody who is 81 dies of COVID-19, that is not the same thing as somebody who is 30 dying of COVID-19...If grandma dies in a nursing home at age 81, that's tragic and it's terrible, also the life expectancy in the United States is 80" pic.twitter.com/L2UJi95OUN

Many conservatives have already said it’s okay if the elderly die because they don’t contribute to the economy. They’re not afraid to say it.

There's a lot to ponder in this #LogansRun way of thinking...and in its counterpoint. Not sure my brain is up to it this morning!

An older person's death is less of a surprise, but no preventable death should be considered acceptable.

If you're 81 when the life expectancy is 80 then your lease on life has expired and so should you, he's saying.

The irony is, of course, that if we're going to start labeling some people "useless" then pundit-entertainers like Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin are going to be at the top of the list.

It's especially ironic coming from two guys dependent on Wingnut Welfare, basing their entire existence on the largesse of billionaire donors that use them as agitators to gain policy that favors their net worth. More 'useless eaters' than these types don't exist.

Easy for them to say since they are not 80. If they live that long they might have a different outlook

Agreed, this is callous. But neither should one ignore the implicit trade-offs between different values at stake: personal liberties, the right to work, to see our friends and family, etc. This is ethics, not science, and we need to acknowledge that. https://unherd.com/2020/04/which-epidemiologist-do-you-believe/ …
