This is so obnoxious on Prasad’s part. He thinks it’s a waste of time for MDs to debunk alt-med, especially if it’s bunk aimed at women (goop). @gorskon on Prasad, the very last section.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/is-defending-science-based-medicine-worth-it/ …

The question is always whether [pick your contrarian opinion] is beyond the pale. Is it legit science, or just total bunk? And if we're going to err about where we draw the line, should we err on drawing it farther out in the contrarian universe?

There's more to it than that. Ioannidis showed up on Fox News and, unwittingly or knowingly, helped spread #COVID19 denial. That goes beyond any line I tolerate.

I think that "unwittingly or knowingly" part matters. I'm pretty sure he didn't go into this wanting to spread denial. I happen to think he's wrong about this, but I believe he is acting in good faith and trying to figure out how we handle this best.

Perhaps I’m being rigid and unreasonable here, but going on the Ingraham Angle crosses so many lines.

I gotta say, I don't like it either. I'm not defending it -- but I find myself unwilling to say it's beyond the pale. The argument, of course, is that you have a chance to inform people.

Even if you're trying to counter obvious misinformation being spewed in such a forum, by simply appearing as a scientist alongside cranks and pseudoscience promoters, you elevate them. You make it appear that there is a legitimate scientific controversy when there is not.

I am honestly conflicted about this. Do you avoid Fox and abandon it to those cranks, or do you appear and try to fight the misinformation? I can see both sides.

If Fox is cherry picking points-of-view that coincide with a pre-existing, fixed perspective, it seems problematic, even if some (or vanishingly few) of those points-of-view come from respected sources. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't let myself be used like that.

I am so not sure. There are so many clips on social media of smart scientists getting the better of Fox ideologues - I gotta believe there's value in that.

Yes, there is value, but it's fairly rare that scientists have the necessary skillset to do that, and the risk of being an inadvertent dupe is very high.

Unless you have A LOT of media savvy as a pundit in addition to your skills as a scientist, the risks of appearing on Fox News almost always outweigh the potential positives.
