Some of us despise the term provider. I was unaware of one aspect of the history of the word until a Jewish colleague wrote this article. It made me empathize and dislike the word even more. 2018 was a very popular year for making analogies to slavery. Didn't make me hate all

Too bad the bit about the German "behandler" being "freely translated" to mean "provider" is based on a translation of the word so free that it might as well be on another planet. That's not what "behandler" translates to, as German speakers have told me.https://twitter.com/Stormageddon666/status/1189124199304044545?s=20 …

Yes, quite freely indeed. There's several equally plausible translations for "Behandler". "treater", "curer", "attender"... all at the very least not WRONG. Also, you'd need throw any remnants of context into the dumpster to get to this absurd nazi analogy.

Another example of how "behandler" does not translate to "provider."https://twitter.com/Desrobertl/status/1188812741508775936?s=20 …

dt. "behandeln" - engl. to treat (a patient) dt. "Behandlung" - engl. treatment dt. "Behandler" - the person who treats patients the term "provider" would rather be translated as "Dienstleister" (=sb. who offers a service)

It's really sad and pathetic how so many of my fellow physicians can fall for such bullshit because it fits in with their preexisting biases.

There is no existing bias that through out history groups have gained control over others with language. You may not agree with the analogy, but the conclusion is there. Its purpose is to undermine us as a peofession.

The "behandler"/"provider" analogy is utter bullshit based on a gross mistranslation. If you want to believe bullshit, that's your right. It is, however, similarly my right to call out that bullshit.

And be offended by it. Kinda bizarre that provider is so offensive but false analogies to genocide are totally fine

Indeed. Long ago, I used to feature a character on my blog that I called the Hitler zombie. When it sure someone’s brain that person started spouting idiotic Hitler and amazing analogies. I used to write what I liked to think were humorous horror stories featuring him.

The purpose? To mock people making really dumb ahistorical comparisons to Hitler and/or the Nazis by portraying them as having had their brains eaten by the Hitler zombie. Those were the days!

I stopped doing it because the Hitler analogies people were throwing around got more and more ridiculous, until I was running out of ways to make fun of them. It’s tempting to bring the undead Führer out of the crypt one more time for “behandler”/provider though.😏
