French doc @raoult_didier has been promoting #Hydroxychloroquine and #Azithromycin to treat #COVID19. Like all true cranks, he's now lashing out at critics as the science trends towards the conclusion that his treatment doesn't… https://respectfulinsolence.com/2020/04/14/didier-raoult-bad-science-bully/ …pic.twitter.com/DviRxw2ZjP

Been watching physicians who should know better adopt this without sound evidence. So much for evidence based medicine.

Sadly, doctors are just as prone to the bandwagon effect and fads as anyone else. Add the distress of seeing lots of patients sicken and die when you don't have a specific treatment for their disease, and allegiance to EBM crumbles.

Fear causes bad decisions. I worry for everyone affected by this one.

Doctors are very much wired to "do something," *anything*, when they don't have a specific treatment. It's a bias that can cause harm (and has likely caused harm in #COVID19 patients).

EBM needs to be blended with common sense in practicing medicine, and it was common sense to try a benign medicine in a life threatening situation. BTW, remember the natrecor and the xigris bandwagons, both evidence based?
