A Texas doctor used his GOP connections to get hydroxychloroquine to administer to dozens of elderly patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in what he calls an "observational study." In some cases, he didn't discuss with families before prescribing the drug.https://trib.al/9wF549I

This is, of course, utterly unethical human experimentation.😡

Hydroxychloroquine approved in the US in 1955. It is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system.2017, it was the 128th-most-prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 5 million prescriptions

Phenobarbital is on the model list of essential medications as well and approved as safe for many purposes. Give it to someone with my form of epilepsy, though, and you’re more likely to kill me than stop my seizures. Safe for some patients/ailments doesn’t mean safe for all.

Dr. Gorski, I agree with the broader concerns about plaquenil, but this is really not experimentation nor is it unethical. Ironically, if he randomly chose who gets the drug and who doesn't THAT would be unethical human experimentation. But is described is standard off-label rx.

As to the consent issue- its a grey area. But we certainly don't obtain full informed consent for every medication in a hospital. If a patient's potassium comes back 2.9 I'll just replete it without necessarily discussing it with anyone. Nor do we get consent for abx for sepsis.

The Harris County Medical Society ( of which I’m a former member) ethics committee should take up this case.
