Reasons to not get over excited about hydroxychloroquine: 1. Early promising therapies often disappoint 2. There are known toxicities & dangerous drug interactions 3. People need these meds for evidence-based indications (eg., RA, SLE) Wait for the studies. Don't hoard.

It’s especially disturbing that it seems to be largely medical professionals doing this and not understanding how science workshttps://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/donald-trumps-dangerous-messaging-about-a-possible-coronavirus-treatment …

The infatuation with
#Hydroxychloroquine to treat#COVID19 began before the right wing grifters latched on to the drug. The origin comes from an unconfirmed, unpublished observation by doctors in Wuhan in January that 80 patients with lupus didn't get coronavirus.4 replies 11 retweets 48 likes -
That let to doctors trying it, anecdotes, and then registered clinical trials, only two of which have been published, both small, one negative, and one positive but so flawed as to be uninformative. 2/

But before even that, in February the Chinese announced that the clinical trial results were "promising" and issued an "expert
#Hydroxychloroquine and#chloroquine to their recommendations for treating#COVID19. Doctors around the world took their word for it and did the same.2 replies 1 retweet 14 likes -
At this point, there was no good evidence, just anecdotes and an announcement by the Chinese that these drugs were promising against
#COVID19. Then came Didier Raoult's criminally shoddy paper claiming that the#Hydroxychloroquine/#Azithromycin combination cleared virus 100%.1 reply 2 retweets 12 likes -
Then came Raoult's uniquely uninformative case series. Finally, there were two Chinese randomized trials, one negative and one with serious flaws that made it also uninformative. On this evidence base,
#Hydroxychloroquine has become, in essence, standard of care for#COVID19.1 reply 1 retweet 11 likes
This is a failure of physicians and evidence-based medicine on an epic scale. In our panic due to the virus, we have bypassed the clinical trial process almost completely and adopted an unproven drug with real toxicity as, in essence, standard of care for #COVID19.

My father - a retired internist - is reading about all of the “studies” and sitting at home fuming.
