The problem with the discussion around hydroxychloroquine is it has become too politicized, as evidenced by the abundance of mentions in this article of how Trump recommended this treatment, including in the subtitle, and the lede. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/29/fda-emergency-authorization-anti-malaria-drug-155095 …

Here is the justification from the FDA for the emergency authorization. I view these statements as true. The EUA specifically mentions use only in hospitals when a trial is not available or not feasible. That's not so radical. https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework/emergency-use-authorization#covidtherapeutics …pic.twitter.com/wyZ5YD67Q8

There is no good evidence suggesting it has any benefit in treating this. So that’s a problem.

agree, no good evidence it has clinical benefit. does the existing evidence of possible benefit outweigh the known and unknown risks, given no other treatments, and fact that RCT data won't happen for a while? in my view, yes.

But couldn't your statement "possible benefit outweigh the known & unknown risks, given no other treatments, & fact that RCT data won't happen for a while" be applied to every situation where there's not approved drugs? Are you saying EUA for every disease w/ no drugs? #COVID19

Exactly! We cannot fall into this trap. We have worked over centuries to improve the way we conduct experiments and treat humans because of many very important reasons, namely ethics and scientific accuracy

Mark my words, those who've always wanted to neuter @US_FDA will use #COVID19 as the pretext to weaken its authority and loosen the standards for drug approval, all in the name of "speeding up cures" and "cutting red tape."

You can't create a crisis (by failing to take the threat seriously and act expetitiously) then attack those tasked with kepin people safe from ineffective or dangerous medicines for asking for proper evidence to be collected. Without evidence, treatment is just a hopeful guess.

Trump has been using that language since before he sidled into the White House. I’ve seen firsthand the damage that can be done even by drugs that have undergone rigorous testing; loosening the standards scares me as much or more than Covid19 does.
