This @DetNewsOpinion op-ed by @khoekstra is pure partisan hack job. It's more propaganda than anything. The evidence that hydroxychloroquine works against #COVID19 is the thinnest of gruel. 1/https://www.detroitnews.com/story/opinion/2020/03/26/opinion-michigans-doctors-fight-coronavirus-and-governors-office/2922272001/ …

The only currently reported clinical trial of chloroquine to treat
#COVID19 was a negative study. 3/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/tarahaelle/2020/03/25/chloroquine-use-for-covid-19-shows-no-benefit-in-first-small-but-limited-controlled-trial/ …Show this thread -
Granted, it was a small study; so it's possible there's an effect that will show up in the larger studies under way, but, given this result, there is no reason to forego clinical trials and give these drugs off trial now. 4/

There are also real world consequences to the hype around these drugs. For one thing, they are not benign. The doses used in the existing clinical trials were high. Although rare, these drugs can cause fatal arrhythmias. 5/

For another thing, the hype has led to hoarding, making it hard for patients who actually benefit from these drugs to get them. These patients suffer if these drugs are diverted before we know if they work. 6/

Given that background, it was entirely reasonable of the state to crack down on the prescribing of these drugs, particularly outside of hospitals, to prevent or treat
#COVID19. 7/Show this thread -
The narrative that the state is somehow hampering the efforts of doctors in Michigan to treat
#COVID19 by restricting the use of these drugs is partisan propaganda, not fact. 8/Show this thread -
Basically, this
@DetNewsOpinion op-ed by@khoekstra is nothing more than a deceptive attack on what was a reasonable order rooted in science and medicine. Quelle surprise, though, given that it's the Detroit News and Hoekstra's with@PacificLegal. 9/9Show this thread -
Whoa. I've changed my opinion. I used to think that the study cited by Hoekstra was just incompetently designed, carried out, and analyzed. Now I think it was more likely scientific fraud. 9a/9https://forbetterscience.com/2020/03/26/chloroquine-genius-didier-raoult-to-save-the-world-from-covid-19/ …
