And…John Ioannidis, someone whom I’ve admired for a long time, has completely lost the plot on #COVID19. 🙄 https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/17/a-fiasco-in-the-making-as-the-coronavirus-pandemic-takes-hold-we-are-making-decisions-without-reliable-data/ …

I think this is a perfect example of "methodolatry,” the profane worship of certain forms of data (e.g., the randomized clinical trial) above all others. It’s EXACTLY the point that we are trying to make decisions NOW in the absence of reliable data.

Public health officials and governments don’t have the luxury of waiting until there are “perfect” (or even really good) data. Decisions need to be made now based on the best projections we can make now.

Ioannidis is also ignoring the fact that we are not without data and appears to be cherry picking only the most favorable data. Is he blind to what is happening in Italy NOW, for instance? The blindness he’s exhibiting is truly horrifying.

Basically, he’s making the perfect the enemy of the good (or even the OK) in terms of evidence. Unsurprisingly, the “don’t worry, be happy” crowd at @reason loves Ioannidis’ take on #COVID19. 🙄https://reason.com/2020/03/18/coronavirus-quarantine-imperial-college-london-covid-19/ …

I wonder if this will make Ioannidis rethink. Italy is still in the exponential phase. Deaths are skyrocketing, with no end yet in sight.https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-tally-idUSKBN21534Z …

He's consistently wrong about epidemiology. The surprise is anyone paid attention to him in the first place. His arguments are essentially the same when it comes to nutritional epi and infectious disease epi.

Governments have to make decisions on the basis of incomplete and even inaccurate data. It is a simple fact of life. I read his article and had exactly the same reaction as you.
