Certainly racism played a part. And the hardening of the hearts after years of war. And a Japan and Germany that also had no qualms with attacking other civilians population. But racism is not all of it

Well, sure. Bombing campaigns almost as horrific were carried out against Germany cities, although there was the dichotomy where the US advocated daylight pinpoint bombings against industry and the British advocated night time mass raids against cities.
