Wow, that was rough. My dad just found out that my lab has run out of research funding. TBH, it was much harder telling him than finding out myself.

My parents know better than anyone the struggles and sacrifices I went through to become a scientist. They are incredibly proud of what I do, even if the whole caper has them scratching their heads sometimes: “what do you mean you don’t get resources to do your job?”

There are a LOT of scientists in this predicament, or worse, at the moment. It’s our big, dirty secret. Most understandably don’t want to talk about it and I’m sharing this against my better judgement.

I’m in this predicament. I still have a little funding, but it’s not enough to pay anyone and it won’t last long. Writing grants is all I do now. I might have to become a full time surgeon. At least I have that option.
