Folks are going through some very elaborate mental gymnastics to avoid the obvious conclusion that "being mean to people you need an alliance with" is bad praxis. I don't understand how this could possibly be controversial.

There’s a lot of wisdom in the proverb “be nice to the people you pass on the way up, because you may meet them again on the way down.”

Did the author of the proverb explain that it only applies to Sanders voters while centrists can be as rude as they want with no consequences?

You seem to be having some trouble distinguishing a moral prescription from pretty basic tactical analysis and advice. I'm a Sanders supporter and voter. Being mean to people we wanted to join us probably hasn't helped us.

I guarantee it’s hurt his campaign. I was open to Sanders as a candidate. His campaign lost me mostly when I saw how viciously his supporters attacked any critics on Twitter. I know other people who chose to support Warren and now Biden instead of Sanders.

Yep. While I admit there could be an element of confirmation bias here, in my experience Sanders supporters on social media react an order of magnitude more viciously to criticism of Sanders than the supporters of any other Dem candidate. Only Trump supporters are worse.

I was never much of a fan of Bernie’s, but his followers have made it less likely that I could eventually become one. If he’s the nominee, I’ll be holding my nose and voting for him, not enthusiastically supporting him.
