The screen is definitely smashed. That can happen when the top of the screen catches on the top of the compartment for the seat tray as the seat comes down. The force bends the laptop screen with enough force to break the glass.

Did the glass break? As a flight attendant, I feel your pain. As a writer, also feel your pain. Normally what happens is a drink that barely fits on the tray table spills on the laptop.
