Educating patients about the dangers of alternative medicine does nothing for one's career/reputation. Those who think silence is the proper response to misinformation are often engaged in careerism.

Counterpoint: there are a couple people who have made an entire career of it. I believe silence is complicit in med misinformation. I so often turn to Berwick's ideas here re: moral responsibility: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2665004 …pic.twitter.com/1iDUyFN40u

To my knowledge, Dr. Ernst is the only person who has made a career out of debunking pseudoscience. I am sure there are others. For others, it is a hobby of sorts, like playing an instrument or learning a foreign language.https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Edzard_Ernst

@EdzardErnst's criticism of the Smallwood report led to Prince Charles' private secretary sending a letter of complaint. http://www.dcscience.net/2013/07/30/the-quacktitioner-royal-is-a-threat-to-constitutional-government-and-to-the-health-of-the-nation/ …1 reply 6 retweets 5 likes
And here's a contemporaneous news report. Basically, basically the complaint from Prince Charles' office tied Edzard up in an investigation for a year, after which his university appears to have decided his department was no longer of value.https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/mar/11/health.monarchy …
