@DaveandChuck The reason @US_FDA has little regulatory authority over supplements is a law called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). It basically regulates dietary supplementsas food rather than medicine.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/dshea-a-travesty-of-a-mockery-of-a-sham/ …

DSHEA does not require supplements to be tested for safety or efficacy before they can be marketed as long as no claims for treating disease are made. Congress has tried to update the law, but powerful Senators have blocked reform.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/the-dietary-supplement-safety-act-of-2010-a-long-overdue-correction/ …

Finally,
@DaveandChuck, powerful lawmakers like Orrin Hatch before he retired, particularly from Utah, which is (believe it or not) the state that is the home of the supplement industry in the US, prevent reform of the DSHEA.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/utahs-senator-orrin-hatch-defender-of-the-supplement-industry/ …2 replies 2 retweets 6 likesShow this thread
There's even a Dietary Supplement Caucus that exists to protect the financial interests of the supplement manufacturers. It's powerful, too. @DaveandChuckhttps://sciencebasedmedicine.org/the-congressional-dietary-supplement-caucus/ …
