The point is that there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat of achieving universal health insurance, single payer being only one possible solution and not even the one most commonly utilized around the world. The above list deceptively implies all those countries use

Moroever, even in Canada the Medicare system is not totally "national." Rather, it consists of 13 provincial and territorial health insurance plans that operate under guidelines set by the federal government. That's more like Medicaid in the US than Medicare.

Agreed, but I shudder to think how tangled that model would get if ported over to the US with its 50 states + 3 territories. If the US does go single-payer, you might be better off doing so nationally to keep the paperwork burden manageable.

I agree. Just look at how some states underfund Medicaid.
