Can Bernie name which of the countries he's listed has a single payer "Medicare for All"-style system of universal health insurance and which have an Obamacare-like system of mandatory health insurance with subsidies for the poor plus a public option (which Obamacare lacks)?https://twitter.com/SenSanders/status/1227959382387941382 …

Remember: our "crazy idea" of universal health care is a reality in: Australia Austria Belgium Canada Chile Czech Rep. Denmark Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Iceland Israel Italy Japan Netherlands New Zealand Norway Poland Portugal S. Korea Spain Sweden Switz. Turkey U.K.

The point is that there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat of achieving universal health insurance, single payer being only one possible solution and not even the one most commonly utilized around the world. The above list deceptively implies all those countries use #M4A.

Moroever, even in Canada the Medicare system is not totally "national." Rather, it consists of 13 provincial and territorial health insurance plans that operate under guidelines set by the federal government. That's more like Medicaid in the US than Medicare.

Is that supposed to be a good thing? You've got this incredible opportunity to make a better universal system from the get go, why would you be content with the failings of elsewhere

We agitate and fight the lack of it up here. We're trying to gain prescription coverage and dental care, for instance. And BC has /finally/ removed provincial premiums since we shook of our conservative government.

Is there a model you feel would be better suited to an American pt population? Any evidence to suggest superiority of one HC model in terms of cost/efficiency & outcomes/quality?

Agreed, but I shudder to think how tangled that model would get if ported over to the US with its 50 states + 3 territories. If the US does go single-payer, you might be better off doing so nationally to keep the paperwork burden manageable.

I agree. Just look at how some states underfund Medicaid.
