Ugh. Got in an argument with a Bernie bro on FB while farting around during lunch. He's basically saying that if the DNC "steals" the nomination from Bernie he won't support anyone else and that we'll deserve another four years of Trump. I really should know better.

No, I don't think so. He's a friend of a FB friend.

I just didn't know he was a Bernie bro until the topic came up on my FB friend's page.

IKR? There was an element of that cultishness to Obama's support, but it didn't reach the depressing levels we see in Trump supporters, for instance.

There was definitely an element of cultishness about Reagan, too. 1980 was the first presidential election I voted in, and, TBH, I fell for it too. I think it had something to do with being a senior in high school during the Iranian hostage crisis.

The daily humiliation the US suffered during the Iranian hostage crisis warped the politics of a lot of young men, I think. It turned us into Reagan youth. Although I never officially joined the GOP, I voted Republican (with one exception) for more than 20 years after that.

It was the increasingly crazy reaction to the Clinton Presidency and and antiscience attitudes that started gripping
@GOP throughout the 1990s and beyond that started my slow deprogramming, which took over a decade to turn me to@TheDemocrats.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
It was the invasion of Iraq that was the last straw. Also, by then I'd finally figured out that tax cuts do not pay for themselves. I might be slow to learn, but I do learn eventually.

In any event, any charismatic political leader is going to have a bit of a cult of personality about him, some more than others. I fear that social media has simply shifted the normal tendency of followers of political movements to become a bit cult-like towards VERY cult-like.
