gun control is needed but seems impt to be able to speak to the difference opponents intuit anyway bet statistical evidence & the kind produced by an experiment where confounding variables are controlled for? 1/2
-
(gun owners are probably safer in those stats, for instance, if they've been trained/licensed, for instance, compared to untrained owners. data like this could be a path to common ground?) 2/2

Saying it's delusion doesn't alter that many of you misrepresent that evidence. The "5 times more likely" statistic Dr Coleman cites there comes from a research study that actually shows a gun may increase a woman's safety if the gun is hers. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1447915/ …pic.twitter.com/iHM4HQg4wS

The overwhelming evidence is that you are more likely to be victimized by a gun than saved by one. As a gun owner your risk increases. This is a failure of statistical reasoning. People latch on to the one example eg of an averted mass shooting, and forget the 399 completed.

It is the ultimate statistical absurdity. Not only is there a measurable, replicated effect for a gun in the home on both risk of suicide and homicide, but there is a dose response. The more exposure, that is carrying one consistently, increases your homicide risk to 4-5x.
-
This is not, in itself, an argument for gun control, as there is no requirement that we should legislate away our ability to endure risk. What it is, is an argument against the complete absurdity of firearms as safety devices - which correlates with unsafe practice among owners.

To use the term of Paul Krugman, it is a zombie idea.

Delusion indeed. Def: a fixed false belief that cannot be shaken with data or reason.
