Why I won't have one, though I kind of would like to. I wish they'd actually make the smart guns (that can only be fired by one person) widely available. What worries me is someone breaking in and getting the gun from me, where they didn't have one to start with.

Way back in 1961, when I was born, my dad took the firing pins from his hunting rifles and chucked them in the Niagara river. He said he was more afraid of shooting a kid sneaking back into the house than he was of any possible intruder.

What's sad is I know a super responsible gun owner. His ammo and guns are separate and even his "bedtime" protection is behind a safe. He's the poster boy of gun safety. He's the ONLY gun owner I know like that. The rest keep their guns in boxes, loaded under their bed, etc.

They’re not what I would consider statistical thinkers. 1 mass shootig gets averted in a year of hundreds and they’re like “see! See!” Dude, if your intervention in the most armed nation in the country averts 1/400 mass shootings (fewer really) then your intervention sucks.

Correct. And how could one of the minority of responsible gun owners use a gun for defence when it is stored unloaded in a locked gun safe? It’s an impossiblity.
-
some don't rely on firearms for self defense. some people actually use them for sport. mine are in a safe. magazines and clips are in another locked box w/ ammo. the key to open either is locked in another safe. It would take me literally 10-15 minutes to get 1 loaded.

I used to conduct surveys for the CDC. One question asked respondents if they had a firearm in the home. The gun nuts would get irate and ask why "THE GOV'T" wanted to know this information in a health survey. I'd have to explain its relevance to accidental injury & suicide.

i've also seen a lot of these 'responsible' gun owners 'prove' how responsible they are by showing the kids where the gun is & how to use it. Well I thought the only 'responsible' people allowed to touch a home gun was someone who'd gone thru the screening & had a license.

Except the “data” always fails to consider defensive uses, as both a victim and a survivor of a home invasion I can tell you that not having a gun when I needed it the most would have been a serious problem.pic.twitter.com/GA2Ko77xUg
