This is one of the dumber antivax memes. For one thing, no one ever said the Tuskegee experiment was “safe.” Second, it’s just a variant of the “science was wrong before” gambit.🙄https://twitter.com/mdo526/status/1213475275784241154 …

And everything’s not black and white. Vioxx may have been useful if only prescribed for people at risk of a GI bleed. Giving it to everybody made the risk outweigh the reward. Of course, Merck bears responsibility for that, but the drug itself may not have been all bad

VIOXX was kind of unfairly vilified. Its no more dangerous than any other NSAID.https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnlamattina/2019/10/10/vioxx-once-vilified-like-thalidomide-may-also-return-to-the-market/#5abff8527e2f …

My brother made the “science changes its mind when it finds out new things” argument. “So science doesn’t know anything.” My mum taught middle-school science. She looked pained. I said, probably too loudly, THAT’S LITERALLY HOW THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS WORKS.

Also Bextra was pulled for a rare skin condition, not the same reason as Vioxx. It just became apparent after it was released

"They" is feature not a bug of anti-science antivaxxers and conspiracy critters. Also trying to hitch a ride on cruel and infamous episodes versus "hey what happened to polio?".

It's a hot mess of a meme, left and right. Lemme see...tobacco! Let's pick that! Epidemiologists Ernst Wynder and Richard Doll make the connection btw smoking and lung cancer 1940s/50s but then face a well-organized, well-financed, badly-intentioned campaign of dissembling...🤔

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure none of these had widespread scientific consensus supporting them like vaccines do.
