No, they break in when no one is home because they don’t want witnesses, and confrontation, whether the home owner has a gun or not, is a complication they’d prefer to avoid.

It’s hilarious because we have data on this too. Burglars prefer homes with guns and look for NRA paraphenalia to identify juicy targets. Guns are more inducement than deterrence.https://www.nber.org/papers/w8926

I have read material from ex-burglars who have said, in effect, if the resident comes in the front door, I'll be running out the back. Burglars aren't in it for the chance of a fight. most of them hit during the day, when the residents are most likely to be gone, at work/school.
