Spare me. That is the single most ridiculous analogy I’ve seen today.
A bookseller can decide to stock a violent white supremacist fantasy novel based on The Turner Diaries if it wants, and I can call out that same bookseller publicly for making the decision to stock the book.https://twitter.com/DrDan_Biotech/status/1212545083461062656 …

We agree on most everything- my concern is that these tend to turn into boycotts and personal attacks. Attack the author and his work. I’ll gladly help. In my judgment it is bad for free society to make booksellers afraid to stock controversial materials.

That said- I respect your thoughts on the matter. This is a judgement call, and not a simple one. I owned a copy of Mein Kampf. Not my favorite read as a Jew- but I wanted to understand it’s significance in history. Should it not be available?

This is a quaint argument in the age of the Internet, when pretty much every “banned book” can be found pretty easily online.

In short- if I had confidence that the criticism would remain at the level of criticism I would agree with you entirely. If we get to the point where booksellers seriously must consider the “risk” of carrying materials we are in a bad spot.

How do you feel about pharmacists refusing to give out Plan -B or contraception? Asked more broadly, do we confer upon sellers the moral responsibility to decide what consumers can obtain, or not? And if individuals are accountable in this way, how do we function?

OK, I take back what I said about your book burning analogy being the most ridiculous analogy I’ve seen today. THIS analogy to pharmacists is the most ridiculous analogy I’ve seen today.

Media is already seriously over-channeled. Do we want to create channels for the printed word? Do we want liberal- and conservative-only bookstores? Is it OK for a Barnes and Noble manager to decide “No LGBTQ in this store?”
