This is a lesson that, until fairly late in life, I rejected, even though a friend of mine in graduate school 26 years ago tried to explain it to me. He was African-American, a surgeon, and a PhD student in the lab where I was doing my PhD.

Growing up white and male and solidly middle class, I had no reason to fear the police. So I didn’t believe him. I’ve since learned to listen better. Not perfectly, to be sure, but better.
