Residency’s really changed since I was a resident. My key concerns then were survival, not harming any patients through ignorance or exhaustion, sleep, and doing reasonably well on the ABSITE.

Yes, I did my residency back in the 1990s, before work hour restrictions.

I did mine in the late 80's. My record was working 120 hours in a 7 day work week in a Chicago ICU (Michael Reese). All I ever wanted to do was sleep.

Yup. During my PGY4 year, I once went four days with maybe a total of 3-4 hours of sleep the entire time.

I was the senior on the transplant service, which for the PGY4 was 24 hr/day every day call for harvests. Due to a shortage of senior residents, I was put back on the general surgery call rotation q3.

So I was doing q3 general surgery call and going out on organ harvests post-call for a week. During a four day stretch, we had harvests and and busy general surgery call.
