The attending physician who saw my mother did not know I was a physician and so I got to see her bedside manner in its full, unfettered glory. It was shockingly bad. I’m a little sick over it.

When I accompany a family member to the doctor or the ER, I very intentionally don’t reveal that I’m a physician, for that very reason.

When dealing with any medical professional, I have to carefully weigh whether I tell them I’m a lawyer. Will they be more careful, or avoid me? It shouldn’t make any difference, but it probably does. An RCT to study this would be interesting.

in my experience it absolutely has mattered. In fact, when I’ve gotten handoffs on patients who have family members who are lawyers, it’s often mentioned in the signout and makes everyone more careful.

I don’t start off announcing it.... but the minute the care is sub-par.... I have to speak up. The way I looked at it, my advocacy for their care was what my parents invested in with my education. They deserved a return on investment.

When I was dating my future husband he accompanied me to a neck biopsy. He’s a pathologist. When the biopsy results came back I told the physician that I wanted to discuss the results w/ my boyfriend. I shared what he did for a living and the physician screamed at me.

At the same time, it may help them to explain some things to you. Shouldn’t you reveal it because of that?

I play it by ear and announce it when/if I deem that the situation calls for it.

last visit to peds was w/ one in group that hadn’t seen us before and 1/2 thru the sick visit, as we are talking about s/s of resp distress, I was unintentionally finishing her s/s. She laughed and asked why I didn’t tell her my profession. Bc I want to be treated like any1 else!

If I were you, I would definitely let them know you are a physician because this will immediately improve the quality of care your relatives get. I wish you could do this for everyone.
