You're right on target, David. GWAS has been a disappointment, but genes obviously have a huge effect on biology and health. E.g. chimps have really similar genes to humans but the genetic differences create rather strong phenotypic differences

BRCAs are a good example. Most breast cancers do not involve a BRCA mutation. However, if you do have certain BRCA mutations, your relative risk for breast cancer is several times higher than w/o a mutation.
