In my time as a general surgeon before I specialized in breast cancer, the only time I diagnosed “leaky gut” was in patients with ischemic or dead bowel.https://twitter.com/GoodishIntent/status/1207079051409661952 …

Guys I didn’t learn about ‘leaky gut’ in medical school or residency or fellowship. How does one test for this? This seems sketch https://twitter.com/drmarkhyman/status/1205655723516006400 …

In a world where people drink bleach now for some reason, "leaky gut" seems inevitable.

No, that will be leaky esophagus. It will eaten away by the bleach, and any that makes it to the stomach will be neutralized by the acid in the stomach

the term just mean that the gut lining is open, not really leaking as in tap, but we know that things like ulcerative colitis etc the gut lining is red and inflamed, this can then let gases through the wall and then the body attacks the particles, causing autoimmune disease.

I had a potential leaky gut prevented by having a left hemicolectomy. The removal of the bowel cancer was a bonus. Does that count?

Until today, I had no idea it wasn't real. I just thought it was another term for IBS 😂

Pretty close minded of you. Medicine is constantly evolving and continuing education after med school is pertinent. You might want to study the correlation between autoimmunity and SIBO. Neurotransmitters are all over the gut. Simple science.
