So it seems "Parental rights" the new (well, not new, but now focused) "1st defense" activists use? Perhaps since their many vax-related arguments fall flat w/ sci & "anti-vax" has stigma, they're going w/ this appeal to virtue, even if it easily fails on ethical/legal grounds.

It’s definitely not new, but it’s a message that antivaxxers found to be effective appealing to those of a conservative/libertarian bent during the debate over SB 277 in 2015.

It’s a gateway message. Conservatives are susceptible to appeals to parental rights as a reason to oppose eliminating nonmedical exemptions to school vaccine mandates and then start listening to and being influenced by the antivax misinformation that goes along with that appeal.

Some of the calls to action expressly tell them not to talk about vaccines risks but just about parental rights.

I think it's becoming more partisan, and that's concerning. It shouldn't be. Preventing disease used to be - and should be - someone everyone can get behind.

That's definitely my assessment too. I don't think Pew, others have enough data pts to see this. One way to assess this wld be to see votes on state vaccination legislation. Most recent ones seem to all be along party lines, but was it this way with legislation say 10 years ago?

I also like to remind people that there's long been a strain of antivax/"health freedom" in the
@GOP. Anyone remember Dan Burton? He was antivax af through the 1990s and 2000s until his retirement in 2012, and he used his position to attack@CDCgov.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2012/11/23/representative-dan-burtons-last-antivaccine-hurrah-is-scheduled-for-november-29/ …8 replies 2 retweets 5 likes -

Probably not. I have other fish to fry right now that interest me far more.
