Why should I, as a scientist and surgeon, accept a practice “not supported by adequate data” about which I “cannot make empirical inferences”? Of course, there’s a lot of evidence about acupuncture, and in its totality it indicates that acupuncture is a theatrical placebo. https://t.co/rfS7ckvgCA

The Placebo Effect is a scientific finding. If it isn’t harmful to the person experiencing it and doesn’t interfere with care, why does that bother any provider?

It’s placebo effects, not just one effect. That aside, though, do you think it’s OK to deceive patients? By telling patients that acupuncture has therapeutic effects (when it doesn’t) in order for it to induce placebo effects, that’s what acupuncturists are doing.

And I never said I would advocate it. I said patients get relief and I’m not going to be the provider to shake my finger at them and tell them how wrong they are.

If there's a better, actually effective treatment, I would argue "not being the provider to shake my finger at them and tell them how wrong they are" is doing them a disservice.
