Why should I, as a scientist and surgeon, accept a practice “not supported by adequate data” about which I “cannot make empirical inferences”? Of course, there’s a lot of evidence about acupuncture, and in its totality it indicates that acupuncture is a theatrical placebo. https://t.co/rfS7ckvgCA

Because it isn’t regulated. Practitioners are not bound to any ethical code. They can milk people for money and waste time on fake treatments and cures - people who perhaps should be seeking real medical attention.

Get a massage. Makes people feel better. Relaxing without needing to invoke magic BS. Acupuncture is nonsense.

Yep. What irritates me is how CAM has falsely medicalized what we used to do just to relax patients or give them something to occupy their time. Massage became massage therapy. Art and music became art therapy and music therapy.🤔

This slightly overlaps with a discussion in the UK @ whether GPs should issue social prescriptions -> the implicit medicalisation of some items & removing power from local initiatives. We even have @NASPTweets (National Academy of Social Prescribing):https://twitter.com/ianbeever/status/1200449594477428737?s=20 …

Yeah Someone can sit with them and hold their hand, talk to them . And try to put them ‘in a different mindset’. I am sure the perception of pain would go away for some. But that is not therapy and hand holding is not a medical procedure

Hmm... 'medicalise things that we used to do to relax' eh? There's a gap in the market for 'alternative sleep'. Simply monitise and medicalise the 'bed'. Bed = 'horizontal equilibrilizer'. Hotel = 'sleep treatment centre'. I can see this being huge.

But at least, the benefits and mechanisms are real, unlike pinning imaginary points in an astrological map of the body to block or release a mythical vital force.
