Be fair to the actual scientists- it is the Express who make claims that they have made a major discovery. The scientists have just used their expertise to add more evidence to the hypothesis that Rome was very multicultural.

I strongly disagree. Leaving aside what the article misstates, genomics/population genetics is a useful input to historical research. It's not like input of a physicist to evolutionary psychology.

Of course, it's true *historians* have known for a very long time that Romans were very good at absorbing & then incorporating into their society different ethnic groups: from Celtic & Germanic tribes to the north to North African groups to the south. But that isn't the point.

You have to read it with the understanding that Express is a right-wing garbage tabloid. Admitting any civilization is a melting pot probably causes the editors physical pain
