Stories like this are why I get irritated when I see my fellow physicians defending surprise medical billing by out-of-network physicians. They’re also why I scoff when I see politicians say how people love their private medical insurance.https://twitter.com/Sblahov/status/1198462404482478080 …

I am stunned. I just got a bill from my May 22 hospital stay at @sibleyonline from an UNSOLICITED SURGERY CONSULT, from Dr. Thomas Zorc & his nurse who don't take my insurance. For these unwanted 10 minutes I now owe $2,300. CC @DonBeyerVA @MarkWarner @timkaine 1/

This physician told me: "I don't accept Blue Cross insurance because it doesn't pay me what I'm worth."

If I were that doctor, even if it’s true that BCBS wouldn’t pay me “what I was worth,” I’d never say that to a patient, not phrased that way.

So we should just sign every contract? I hope you don’t shop for cell phone or cable that way... corporate abuse of labor includes physicians. They write the rules, then vilify us for not accepting non-negotiable rates

Some people say that they do love their private insurance. I wonder though, what percentage of them have actually had to use it?

I’ll be honest. I have very good insurance, and, although I don’t exactly love it, I do like it OK. Even so, I would totally trade it in for a simpler system without a lot of the copays. However, the horror stories I’ve heard about the crap insurance a lot of people have...😬

There are also things which just can't be done in network. Where I live, and who I have for my insurance, I literally can't get SRS/GCS in network. Which means what would cost me roughly $2k through insurance will at bare minimum cost me $5k.

So, just give the insurance cronies unfettered reign. Smart plan.
