I took typing at the all boys Catholic school I attended in the late 1970s. There was only one electric typewriter (the rest were ancient and nonelectric), and we took turns using it. Oddly enough, typing is probably the most useful skill I learned in high school.https://twitter.com/heroinebook/status/1196802439002767360 …

For some reason I'm thinking about how my typing skills have allowed me to have this career and this life trajectory. And...the history of my typing skills is rooted in so much historical insanity. First: Typing class. pic.twitter.com/twD70DAfwL

I never took typing in school. Couldn't fit it in with my electives. But I'd like to say that I've never had an issue with typing, and having played a musical instrument for 3/4's of my life, I manage a respectable WPM.

Well, today’s different. Almost no one owned a personal computer back then, and you could get by quite fine without knowing how to type faster than the hunt and peck method.

Took typing in 7th grade at the cusp of the computer revolution... We had a bunch of computers (TRS-80), but didn't get software until halfway through the class. For practice, we'd just type at the command line and ignore the error messages.

I learned typing on a IBM Selectric II in middle school even though I already had a Apple //e in elementary/ primary school

My high school counsellor didn’t think I was suited to uni, despite my abilities (parents weren’t educated enuf), insisted I should be taking “business” oriented classes so I could be a secretary. I agreed to take typing alongside uni entrance courses, but had to give up French.

I also had typing class in High School ~1982. We had four manual typewriters in the back row in a room otherwise full of electric. I was in the back row. Class with highest long-term value in HS.

Same here. Had to take 2 semesters of business-oriented courses. Took typing and desktop publishing, 2 things I thought I'd never use. One I use every day and the other--well--I've been newsletter for our astro society for nearly 22 years now.
